Tiny Marsh Provincial Wildlife Area
Description
Tiny Marsh is Ontario’s first provincially owned and managed wetland, near Elmvale at the south edge of Tiny Township. It covers about 8.5 square kilometres of marsh, open water, bog and upland forest, and is a recognised Important Bird Area with roughly 250 bird species recorded, including the provincially threatened least bittern and black tern.
More than 15 kilometres of trails cross the site, running along dikes out into the marsh and through the surrounding forest. Along them are two observation towers, a marsh viewing mound, a wildlife blind and a boardwalk. A nature centre with displays of the marsh’s flora and fauna opens through spring and summer. The area is open to visitors year-round.
The wetland is managed by the MTM Conservation Association, the non-profit responsible for Tiny Marsh along with Marl Lake and Matchedash Bay.
