As a proud Midlander who’s wandered this town for years, I’m thrilled to share the wonders of our little slice of Georgian Bay paradise with you! Midland might not make international headlines, but those of us lucky enough to call it home know we’ve got something special.
Let me take you on a local’s tour of what makes this waterfront town so wonderful.
Waterfront Wonders
The heart and soul of Midland is undoubtedly our waterfront. On summer mornings, I love grabbing a coffee at Grounded and watching the gentle ballet of watercraft from the harbor.
Sailboats, motorboats, fishing boats, pontoons, canoes, paddleboards, jet skis, giant speedboats with thundering multiple motors, elegant yachts, and tour boats glide across Georgian Bay’s sparkling blue waters.
The boardwalk offers spectacular views across the bay, and trust me—you haven’t seen a sunset until you’ve seen one over Georgian Bay from our shores.
Local tip: The benches near the clock tower provide the best sunset viewing spot, but arrive early during peak summer weekends as fellow sunset enthusiasts (locals and visitors alike) have the same idea!
Our Natural Treasures
Midland is blessed with exceptional natural areas where visitors can connect with the unique ecosystems that make our region so ecologically significant.
Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre: Wetland Wonders
Just minutes from downtown, Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre feels like stepping into another world. I still get excited spotting turtles sunning themselves on logs or catching glimpses of trumpeter swans gliding across the water.
The floating boardwalks bring you right into the midst of this 3,000-acre wetland paradise—wear comfortable shoes and bring your binoculars!
Little Lake Park: Community Gathering Place
Little Lake Park has been our community gathering place for generations. I learned to swim at its beach, enjoyed countless family picnics under its trees, and still enjoy an occasional winter sledding adventure down its perfect hills.
The playground has been updated since my childhood days, but the joyful sounds of children playing remain delightfully unchanged.
Midland’s Food Scene
We might be a small town, but our food scene punches well above its weight!
Explorer’s Café: Farm-to-Table Georgian Bay Flavors
Explorer’s Café has been my go-to for locally sourced comfort food for years. Their seasonal menu changes showcase the best of Georgian Bay’s bounty, and their patio feels like an extension of my own backyard (but with much better cooking!).
Dillon’s Wood-Fired Pizza: A Local Institution
For pizza night, nothing beats the wood-fired perfection at Dillon’s. The owners know most regulars by name, and the cozy atmosphere makes winter evenings especially delightful.
Boathouse Eatery: Waterfront Dining with a View
For waterfront dining, Boathouse Eatery combines spectacular views with equally impressive cuisine. I’ve celebrated countless special occasions here, watching boats drift by while savoring locally caught fish.
Butter Tarts: Midland’s Sweet Claim to Fame
And butter tarts? They’re practically our official town dessert! The annual Butter Tart Festival transforms our streets into a sweet-lover’s paradise with over 200,000 tarts sold in a single day.
Even outside festival season, Granny’s Butter Tarts maintains the tradition with what many locals (myself included) consider the perfect butter tart—just the right balance of gooey filling and flaky crust.
Midland’s Magnificent Murals
Our downtown buildings tell stories—literally! The Midland Murals transformed our ordinary walls into extraordinary canvases depicting our history and culture. I still remember the excitement when each new mural was unveiled.
My personal favorite shows the steamship era, mainly because my grandfather worked on one of those majestic vessels.
Walking downtown and spotting visitors photographing our murals always fills me with hometown pride. Take your time exploring them all—there are artistic details you’ll only notice on a second or third viewing.
Shop Local, Midland Style
King Street’s independent shops showcase the creativity and entrepreneurship of our community.
Simply Country: Rustic Home Treasures
I’ve furnished half my home with treasures from Simply Country, where the thrill of the hunt is as enjoyable as the finds themselves.
Tiny Gems: Simcoe County’s Crystal Destination
Downtown Midland is a treasure trove for shoppers seeking unique finds. Tiny Gems boasts the largest selection of tumbled stones in Simcoe County, with a huge array of crystals, minerals, fossils, gemstone beads, gemstone jewelry, and gifts.
I’ve spent countless hours exploring their fascinating collection – it’s impossible to leave empty-handed!
The Olive Oil Co.: Specialty Oils & Vinegars
The Olive Oil Co. has become my go-to for gourmet olive oils and balsamic vinegars that have completely transformed my home cooking—their tasting bar lets you sample before buying, and I’ve spent many delightful afternoons discovering new flavor combinations.
Arts & Entertainment
Our creative community thrives in several dedicated spaces that showcase local talent and bring diverse performances to our town.
Midland Cultural Centre: Performance & Gallery Space
Midland’s creative spirit shines through our vibrant arts scene. The Midland Cultural Centre hosts everything from intimate jazz performances to community theater productions in its modern facilities.
Quest Art School & Gallery: Exhibitions & Workshops
Quest Art School & Gallery showcases talented local artists alongside touring exhibitions, with hands-on workshops where visitors can tap into their own creativity.
Our Rich History
Midland sits on the traditional lands of the Wendat (Huron) and Anishinaabeg peoples, who recognized the natural beauty and strategic importance of this area long before European settlement.
The town as we know it today really blossomed with the arrival of the railway in 1879, transforming Midland into a bustling lumber and shipping hub.
Many of our downtown’s heritage buildings date back to this golden era—just look up when you’re strolling King Street to appreciate the architectural details our ancestors left us! For history enthusiasts wanting to dive deeper, check out our detailed timeline of Midland’s fascinating history.
Historical Gems
Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons isn’t just a tourist attraction to us locals—it’s a living connection to our earliest European history. The reconstructed 17th-century French Jesuit mission shows how two worlds collided and coexisted in what would eventually become our hometown.
The staff in period costumes bring history alive, and even after dozens of visits, I always learn something new.
The nearby Martyrs’ Shrine stands as a serene testament to faith and dedication. Its beautiful grounds offer peaceful reflection space, and the architecture impresses visitors and locals alike. The annual pilgrimages bring visitors from across the country to our doorstep.
Festival Fun Year-Round
No matter when you visit, there’s likely to be a celebration or seasonal event that showcases our community spirit.
Butter Tart Festival: Sweet Summer Tradition
Midlanders know how to celebrate! Besides the aforementioned Butter Tart Festival (mark June on your calendars!), the Midland Cultural Festival showcases our community’s diverse heritage through food, music, and performances that transform our downtown.
Holiday Magic: Christmas Markets & Lights
During Christmas, our waterfront and downtown twinkle with thousands of lights, creating a magical atmosphere for holiday shopping and our Santa Claus Parade. The Christmas market brings artisans together for unique gift-buying opportunities that support local creators.
Family Festivals: Rib Fest & Ice Festival
For families, the annual Midland Rib Fest combines mouthwatering barbecue with kid-friendly activities and live entertainment, while winter’s Ice Festival features stunning sculptures and outdoor activities that embrace our snowy season.
Where To Stay
Midland offers accommodation options to suit every preference, from historic charm to modern convenience to immersion in nature.
1875 A Charters Inn: Historical Charm
When friends visit me, I often recommend 1875 A Charters Inn for its perfect blend of historical charm and modern comforts. The hosts treat guests like family, and the heritage building offers a glimpse into Midland’s past.
Midland Inn & Suites: Central Convenience
For those seeking convenient accommodations, Midland Inn & Suites provides comfortable rooms in a location that makes it easy to explore all our town has to offer.
Awenda Provincial Park: Camping Under the Stars
Nature enthusiasts should consider camping at nearby Awenda Provincial Park, where pristine beaches and woodland trails offer the quintessential Georgian Bay experience. I still camp there at least once each summer, despite living just minutes away!
Exploring Beyond
While Midland has plenty to keep visitors engaged, our surrounding area offers wonderful day trip opportunities:
Penetanguishene: Historical Harbor Town
Our sister town Penetanguishene is just minutes away, with the fascinating Discovery Harbour historical site showcasing our naval history through reconstructed buildings and tall ships that transport you back to the War of 1812 era.
Awenda Provincial Park: Five Pristine Beaches & Ancient Forests
Awenda Provincial Park’s five pristine beaches and 29 kilometers of hiking trails provide the perfect nature escape. The ancient hardwood forests and clear waters of Georgian Bay create unforgettable landscapes in every season.
UNESCO Biosphere: Georgian Bay’s 30,000 Islands
The 30,000 Islands region of Georgian Bay lies just beyond our harbor, offering world-class boating adventures through what UNESCO designated as a World Biosphere Reserve.
Get up close and personal with the 30,000 Islands on boat cruises that navigate narrow channels and hidden coves, revealing the archipelago’s secrets from water level.
Winter Escapes: Slopes & Skiing Within an Hour
For winter sports enthusiasts, Mount St. Louis Moonstone and Blue Mountain’s slopes are within an hour’s drive. Many Midlanders make weekend pilgrimages during ski season, returning home to cozy fireplaces and our more relaxed small-town vibe.
Practical Information
Midland is approximately 90 minutes north of Toronto, making it perfect for weekend getaways. While having a car offers the most flexibility for exploring, regional transit connections are available.
The best time to visit depends on what you’re after: Summer (June-August) brings warm beach days and peak festival season; Fall (September-October) offers spectacular foliage and fewer crowds; Winter (November-March) transforms the area into a snow-covered playground; and Spring (April-May) brings blooming trails and the first boating opportunities of the year.
A Final Thought From a Local
Living in Midland means embracing the rhythm of the seasons—from summer’s waterfront bustle to winter’s peaceful snow-covered shores. We’re a community that values our natural environment, celebrates our history, and welcomes visitors with genuine small-town hospitality.
Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or considering a more permanent move to our shores (we welcome new neighbors!), Midland offers that rare combination of natural beauty, cultural richness, and community warmth that makes a place truly special.
Come visit us on Georgian Bay—the water’s fine, the butter tarts are better, and the welcome is always warm!
